Horse Fencing – The Solar Powered Variety Is Often The Most Practical

October 6, 2011 by · Comments Off

Depending on where you live and what kind of enclosure you want on your property, electric horse fencing might be for you. It can be either a permanent, temporary or movable structure. This is very convenient if you have a number of different horse coming to and leaving your property on a regular basis.

Basically, there are two essential components to electric fencing. One of the components send the current out and the other component is the negative or neutral element that provide for a complete circuit of electricity. There is a line that the energy runs through that runs around the enclosure. The negative or neutral elements are made up of the negative terminal portal on the charger and all the conductors that are connected to it.

At that point, it is a complete circuit. When the animal touches the fence it essentially shortens the circuit and becomes the conduit for the electricity. The current will travel through the animal’s body and down out their hooves into the ground and back to the terminal to complete the circuit. For this to work though, the ground must have a certain amount of water in it for the electricity to travel.

Proper grounding and the terminal energizer are the most important elements in this system. If the current can not reconnect back to the terminal through proper grounding the fence will not work. If the energizer become faulty for any reason, there will be no current produced.

If you find a problem with the grounding, it may be that you need to add extra poles, either vertical or horizontal underneath the surface. You could install a more powerful energizer or one of the most effective techniques to try is running a neutral wire along side the positive conduction wire. When the animal touches both of these wires as the same time, this will complete the circuit.

You can run your energizer one of three different ways, electrically by plugging it into an outlet, with batteries, or you can install a solar powered charger. This third choice is by far the most practical if somewhat more expensive at the onset. Batteries need to be changed regularly and finding a plug in for the charger may be out of the question. Solar power works all year long.

The solar powered units may be somewhat more expensive at the initial purchase but, in the long run these units can save you a lot of money, time and potential down time in your fencing. Solar units are even far less likely to get hit by lighting which sometimes happens with regular chargers.

The problem of an energy surge is one to keep in mind too. It sometimes happens that the main source of electricity will suddenly send way too much electricity to the charger and it blows it out. This is impossible to accomplish with the solar unit as its energy source is the sun. So, the electric option may be the right one for you when you are looking to set up horse fencing on your property.

Horse Gates Come In Many Different Styles

August 9, 2011 by · Comments Off

Any place that has horses is going to have some type of horse gates. Any fence has to have some way to get inside of the pastures. You cannot expect the horse to jump the fence to get inside. If they could jump it to get in, they can do the same to get out. These are also helpful when you have an animal that is not well-behaved.

These gates can be any color that you would like. Most of the time, they use steel to make them. Those are the most common ones that are sold now. These hold up a lot better than the wooden ones. Some people will make their own for inside of the stalls and other places too.

The length of these will vary with some be long and other being shorter. The barn stalls will have very short ones because there is no room open the larger ones. Pastures will most like have longer ones that will allow even the worst behaved horse to be brought through them. Sometimes people will be able to put the horse trailer right into the pasture when they are unloading.

The latches for them are going to be different for each one too. They are smart animals which means that they may be able to open up some of these latches. This is why a lot of them will get out of the fences. Some can be as simple as pushing a pin through something but others may require a lot more effort to latch them. It can be frustrating when horses are constantly escaping.

An untrained animal is not fun to try and catch when it gets out of the pen. A lot of people will run a string to electric fence across their entry way to the pasture so that if they do get it open, they will be too scared to run out. Some of them will go through regardless but most of them will not.

Not everybody is using this type of horse fence for an animal pasture though. Some people will use them to place at the end of their driveway to keep people out that do not belong in there. Other people may put them on a fenced in hay field so that they are able to fit their tractor through. Two of them can be put together so that the opening can be twice as large.

Painting these is very easily done when you want to change the color. It can match the rest of the items on the farm. These can be painted as many times as needed. There are many colors to choose from so usually color is not a problem. Most people can find what they need.

Animal supply stores and ones that carry farm equipment will more than likely sell these. A lot of lumber companies will have these too. They are not just used for farms. There are many uses of them. Because they are so durable, they can be used for a lot more than just horses. People that have some cattle, sheep or goats will buy these too.

Based in Ontario, we specialize in servicing the best horse fencing and equine fences. Whatever your needs, you can count on us to deliver solutions to any fence painting needs.

Fleas And Other Parasites

August 2, 2011 by · Comments Off

We all dislike to think that we have insects feeding and living off us. Mosquitoes are bad enough, but fleas, ticks and lice are even worse. They do not simply come over for dinner, they actually move in. Dogs and cats are usually responsible for bringing fleas into our homes, but ticks and lice we can bring ourselves as well.

If you suspect an infestation or an immanent infestation of fleas or other bugs in your home, you ought to do something about it right away. The first thing to do is tie the dog up in the garden and clean up the house. Place your bedding and any loose covers, like cushion or chair covers, on a boil wash. Then get out the vacuum cleaner, put a large shake of flea powder into the bag and vacuum the whole house – even the chairs and the curtains.

Then take a large can of insecticide containing 0.5% permethrin and spray every fabric that you can see. This will kill all bugs and will keep your house bug free for about six months. Think twice if you have fish or cats as permethrin will kill them too, although it is completely safe for humans and dogs.

So, now you can turn your attention to Fido. Fleas are by far the most common issue, but some areas where there are deer, may have a lot of ticks too. If you dog has ticks, make certain that you keep your grass short. Ticks like long grass.

Fleas and ticks frequently produce an allergic reaction in dogs which drives them mad. They bite and scratch themselves until their fur falls out and their skin bleeds.

If you dog has a problem like this, you should bathe him with a medicated shampoo, dust him with flea powder, put a flea collar on him and put a little oil on his sore skin. If he still will not leave it alone, you may have to get him a ruff for a few days until his skin heals over. For maintenance, a regular bath and a dusting should be sufficient.

Worms are another horrifying thought. Imagine having worms living inside you. I know that we do all have parasites within us, but they are supposed to be there. I am talking about the ones that are not supposed to be in there like: tape worms, round worms, hook worms and whip worms. A bad hook infection can even make your dog anaemic.

Hook worm larvae can enter through the skin, so when you are washing or brushing him, be on the look out for what looks like small cuts. Often the dogs stools will be runny and tinged with blood. These are dangerous pests and need to be treated immediately.

The other worms are less dangerous and all puppies have round worms. Round worms and bits of dead tape worm in the stools are a sign of infection. A pot belly in a puppy is also a call to action. Worms are not difficult to treat and you should worm your dog every six months with a tablet. Not all of these worming tablets are suitable for puppies though.

Dogs With Diabetes

July 31, 2011 by · Comments Off

How could you tell if your dog might possibly have diabetes? In the wide majority of cases, it is not very common for younger dogs to contract diabetes, but if your pet is older than 4 years old and is exhibiting other symptoms, then the possibility for diabetes could be a real one. Diabetes in dogs is quite a bit more common in females. Many of a dog’s symptoms are much like those of diabetes in humans.

Signs Your Dog May Have Diabetes

* Canine diabetes can begin with an out of shape, overweight dog. This is not always true though; in some breeds it can be in the gene pool. Being obese can be a dangerous sign though.

* Diabetes typically happens in dogs close to the ages of 7 to 9.

* With bigger dogs there is more of a possibility to get diabetes than there is with a littler breed.

* Watch for unquenchable thirst. If this happens, do not try to limit your dog’s water intake. This is necessary because your dog will require all the water it desires to help keep from becoming dehydrated.

* Drinking so often means he/she will need to use the bathroom more often. Your pet, the one you’ve worked so hard to house train so well could start having accidents more often on your carpet. Why? They are not used to carrying around so much liquid in their bladder. Much like the chicken and the egg, and the debate of which came first, the need for water or the need to urinate has been discussed both ways.

* Your dog may begin dropping weight quickly and unusually, even though she is eating more and could start moving slowly and showing signs of being worn out, acting very fatigued.

* Your dog may begin losing their eyesight, having issues seeing.

Preventing diabetes in your dog:

1. If you see your dog beginning to gain weight, or if they are already overweight, lower the number of carbohydrates they consume. Yes, much like humans, a large number of carbohydrates add to to weight gain, which adds to the probability of diabetes. Many common dog foods have ingredients that include as much as 98% carbohydrates. Read the food labels and gather as much information as you can about your dog breed to make sure that he is receiving the correct amount of nutrients. Making the switch to a healthier dog food can be an enormous step towards the right direction.

2. Get lots of exercise! A lot of dogs get diabetes that could be completely avoided if they had kept exercising and not gotten out of shape. This is where you and your family can pitch in, as the dog owners. If your dog stays sedentary and out of shape, he can contract diabetes even if he is not a breed that is typically at risk.

As of this writing there is not a cure for diabetes. Work together with your vet to ensure that your dog gets the correct treatment and the correct medication to continue to have a happy life. Sometimes diabetes will remain all the way through your dog’s life span. To prevent diabetes symptoms in your dog, do your best to keep your dog’s weight appropriate, get him adequate exercise, and give the dog its medication on a regular basis along with enough water.

Training Staffordshire Bull Terriers – Tips For Achieving Success

July 4, 2011 by · Comments Off

Training Staffordshire bull terriers is not a hard thing to do once you have the right resources at your disposal. In point of fact, all of your staffy development can be done in the family environment. But it is actually important to make a good start while the dog is still at a young age. Of all the dog breeds staffies are one of the most popular, endearing and lovable. They also show an amazing amount of dedication to their owners and families. In order to forestall an early death for your best friend or any kind of hassle, you should make certain that you learn about training Staffordshire bull terriers.

Staffies like the comfort and familiarity of routines. For example, establishing a feeding pattern from an early age works really well. The same holds true for your dog’s sleeping and walking times. Your pup will likely become very restless if you don’t put these routines into place as part of training staffordshire bull terriers.

Remember that while it may look cute to let your dog grab food from your hand, you will realize that it is a great idea to break this habit. You must educate your dog to be gentle when it takes food from your hand. This again should be done when the staffy is still quite young.

Training staffordshire bull terriers should always involve a portion of leash training. Dogs can be very strong and as we mentioned before, you should train it to obey you in this respect from an early age since the dog could hurt you or even get itself killed if it is out of control and out of order. The power of a staffy will allow them to rip the leash out of your hands if they don’t learn how to respond to it appropriately.

Staffies are dogs which have been known to like to chew on things too. This is ok if it has its own toys, but without them you may find yourself with destroyed clothes, footwear or furniture.

A stout toy is crucial to keep a staffy safely engaged. A fragile toy will only endure 5 minutes and your dog could choke on the fragments.

Keep a suitable toy close to hand so that if you observe your dog chewing the furniture, you can halt its actions immediately and give them your approved toy. Training as a pup will be best in this regard.

Finally, socialisation education is also of great consequence in terms of training staffordshire bull terriers so that it learns to get on well with other dogs.

The Way To Groom Your Canines Yourself

February 20, 2011 by · Comments Off

Professional dog groomers can be very expensive, especially when an owner needs to take their dog at least once a month to have them groomed. Dog grooming is necessary because if ignored, it will affect the hygiene of the dog and cause psychological and physiological problems. However, individuals are able to groom their dogs at home as well with just a few tips and some grooming supplies.

The primary thing any dog owner needs to think about is the dog’s coat. It needs to be maintained so the dog does not have to worry about pests, including fleas. Get a soft-bristled brush and brush the coat every day. This will prevent tangles and make the coat shiny and prevents shedding.

Have the coat trimmed or do it at home. To give a dog a trim, individuals need a blow dryer, clippers, scissors, and a comb. A majority of dogs only need to be trimmed once in a two month period, however some dogs need a monthly trimming. A trimmed coat is not appealing to fleas.

Dogs are required to have baths, despite how difficult the task might be. Do not use human shampoo on dogs. Their coat is special and requires specific nutrients only found in dog shampoo. Individuals will also need soap, comb, brush, and lots of towels. Before the bath, comb the hair to prevent tangles. Dogs with long hair require a bath once a month, whereas short haired dogs only need a bath once every two months. But, of course, if the dog gets covered in mud, it must be bathed. Bathing eliminates skin diseases and fleas. A dog always smells so nice after a bath.

Nails need to be clipped. Nails that are not clipped will rip furniture, not to mention scratch people. Clip a dog’s nails once a month. Get nail clippers made especially for dogs. Buy blood-clotting powder just in case the need arises.

Always brush the dog’s teeth. Dogs can get cavities and other mouth and gum related diseases. There is special toothbrushes and toothpaste that can be bought for dogs. Their teeth should be brushed twice a week.

Clean the dog’s ears on a regular basis. If not cleaned, it will cause chronic ear problems, because of a buildup of yeast and bacteria. There are drops that can be used to clear out their auditory organs.

Dogs are a man’s best friend. However, it is up to the owner to keep their dog healthy and happy. The best way to ensure this is through grooming. Whether an individual chooses to groom their dog at home or take them to a grooming salon, it demonstrates affection for the dog.

Treating Dog With Recurring UTI

March 20, 2009 by · Comments Off

by Geraldine Dimarco

Canine urinary tract infection or canine UTI affects approximately 14% of the entire dog population in the world. This condition happens in dogs when bacteria such as E. coli, klebsiella, coagulase positive straphylococcus, pseudomonas, esterococcus, or proteus mirabilis gain access to the dog?s bladder, urethra, and the kidneys and cause infection. Dog UTI is a serious health problem in dogs. If not treated immediately, it could spread to other areas of the dog?s internal system such as the heart and cause further harm and even death. Therefore, it is imperative that you bring your dog to the veterinarian immediately when you see any of the signs of canine UTI.

The symptoms of UTI in a female puppy are easy to detect if you are aware of the urinating habit of your puppy. Any signs of irregularity may signal a problem in the puppy?s health.

These signs are closely associated with canine UTI but may also be symptoms of other urinary problems in dogs. In some instances, dogs which have already been diagnosed and treated with dog UTI contract a recurrence of the disease. This happens when bacteria have developed immunity to the antibiotics and treatment given. In cases such as these, the veterinarian would have to perform appropriate course of action to prevent another recurrence of the disease.

Female puppy UTI could cause a lot of discomfort to the puppy. It is important that as a dog owner, you take the necessary precautions to keep your puppy free from infection. Female puppies are especially prone to UTI, so you must see to it that you give it proper care daily. Giving it enough amount of clean water to drink everyday and washing it regularly would help. Likewise, you may give it a dose of homeopathic remedy to help keep its immune system strong to fight against infections. Most importantly, bring it to the vet immediately when you suspect it is suffering from any of the symptoms of female puppy UTI.

Before giving your dog these ingredients, though, be sure to have it brought to the vet for examination first, especially when you notice signs of symptoms of canine UTI in your pet. Canine UTI is a serious health problem in dogs and must not be ignored. Seek the help of a veterinarian as soon as possible when your dog shows signs of dog UTI. This way, you can save your pet from further health problem.
