Pet food never used to be a problem, as most people simply fed their pet table scraps. But now we know that giving our dog table scraps is bad, this is because it may cause to health problems, because the food eaten by humans is not always right for dogs.

There is no one dog food that is suitable for every dog, so some times selecting the right one can be hard. The choice of dog food varies, depending on the age of your dog, breed and size. Convenience may also influence you in your decision on what you think is the right kind of dog food for your pet.

Preservatives

Chemicals and preservatives are just as bad for dogs as they are for humans. The recent instance of contaminated dog food that has led to pet deaths has scared many pet owners. In many cases to the point of completely eliminating any commercial dog food in their home. While producing your own dog food at home is certainly one way to control the food your dog eats, it is not always convenient or possible.

One way to eliminate preservatives from your pets diet is to choose a holistic pet food that is chemical and additive free. There are a variety of brands that provide good nutrition without chemicals or additives. Wellness dog food is a good example of pet food that has all the goodness of nature without the nasty chemicals that may cause your dog to be ill.

Dry Food Or Canned

Do you give your pet dry dog food or canned pet food is another decision you might want to make. For some pet owners this is a matter of economics. Dry food is easier to store and often a lot cheaper. This will mean you will have to make less trips to the pet store and less money will be spent by you at the end of the day. While this may be more economical, you should still take care about the kind of dry food that you give your dog.

A better choice may be canned food as it has fewer preservatives in it. But this choice can present a storage problem and you may find it a lot more expensive than dry dog food. Another factor in choosing might be your dogs preference! Some dogs will only eat certain types of pet food while others will eat just about anything. Experiment a little and be sure to change your dogs diet slowly into eating the new dog food of your choice. You can always try different flavors to see what your dog prefers.

Recent research indicated that higher levels of protein in your dogs diet might lead to kidney failure. Do you know if your dogs diet is safe? Are you killing your furry sidekick by providing too much protein in your dogs diet?

These studies that established a link to high protein levels and kidney failure that started the fears about protein levels in a dogs diets was not researched properly. The research was performed on rats, not dogs. Rats in the main eat plants as their normal diet. Consequently a rats biological constitution would mean it would have problems digesting a diet containing high levels of protein. Rats have trouble excreting protein due to their natural dietary requirements, not because the high protein diet causes kidney failure.

Thus, where do we stand on protein in your dogs diet? Dogs are naturally omnivorous. In the wild, dogs would hunt or scavenge for food. Your dogs diet would normally be of both animals and plants. Naturally dogs are meat eaters too. Because of this, a dog can easily manage with a diet consisting of 30% protein or more.

When the protein consumption is lowered in a dogs diet, renal function does not improve. Renal lesions are not less likely to form when a dog is being fed a low-protein diet. It is not until a blood urea nitrogen, or BUN, test indicates a level of 75, then a reduction in protein consumption should be considered.

If you have concerns about the amount of protein in your dogs diet, schedule an appointment to speak with a professional on the subject. Your trusted veterinary can advise you on the specifics in regards to your dogs diet.

It is not correct that dogs can not ordinarily digest high levels of protein. Kidney problems do not result from having high levels of protein in your dogs diet. Large amounts of protein are digested safely in your dogs diet, particularly when they primarily come from animal origins.

Ten amino acids must be provided in your dogs diet through protein. Only twelve of 22 amino acids can be manufactured in your dogs liver. For this reason, meat such as heart, spleen, and meat by-products all have a place in your dogs diet.

If you purchase high-quality dog food it should contain meat as the main ingredient. This will furnish the right amount of protein in your dogs diet. If you think about a dog in its natural environment, would you see a wild dog grazing in a corn field at mealtime?

Aging dogs should not be put on lower protein diets just because of age. As a matter of fact, some older pets want a dogs diet that is higher in protein than when they were at a younger adult stage. Unless your veterinary surgeon advises not to, you should always provide your pet the advantage of quality protein in your dogs diet.

Feeding your dog protein should not cause you concern. You want what is best for your dog and nature tells you that protein will help your dog to thrive. If you have questions about the myth of protein and kidney failure in your pet, speak to your veterinarian about your dogs diet.
