How To Make A Dog’s Dinner
February 1, 2012 by Owen Jones · Leave a Comment
What goes to make a dog’s dinner? The phrase implies a mess, but most dogs’ dinners these days look fairly appetizing – a bowl of pleasant-smelling biscuits or half a tin of something that seems like cold meat pie filling.
It all looks very lovely to us humans. And that is the whole point – dog food is sold to humans on its looks and aroma.
We don’t actually know what the dog thinks of it. We just know that they wolf it down, but then so would you if you were famished and you knew that the likelihood was that that was all you would get offered.
The fact is that a dog will eat almost anything if there is sufficient sugar or and salt in it. I had a collie-cross that would eat anything I offered her except Brussels sprouts (she would take them politely and throw them around, but she would not eat them).
It stands to reason that you will not get a can of decent pie filling for a dollar, so whatever is in there cannot be best beef. Yet it has to be fit for human consumption, so what is it? Well, to start with, the gravy is probably manufactured of carcass scrapings and blood, thickened with flour.
That would make it quite nourishing, but not as appetizing as it looks. The ‘lumps of meat’ are probably not meat. They are most probably offal and soy or something similar. Again, not a bad thing, but not what it is intended to look like to us and the dog will absolutely know that it is not meat.
So what ought to constitute a dog’s dinner? In the wild, a pack of wolves would bring down, say, a deer and rip its stomach open. The contents thereof are the first course. Since wolves by and large eat vegetarian animals, the stomach contents will usually include grass, leaves and other plants.
Then they will move on to the internal organs like heart and liver. The stomach and organs are the best bits and just the top dogs get them. Once they are gone, they rip the carcass apart and devour the meat. Later they chew on the bones.
Those are the guiding principles for making a dog’s dinner. if you cook your own evening meal, cook a bit extra for the dog. Liquidize the vegetables to imitate the chewed food that would be in the deer’s stomach. Most decent butchers will have ‘pets’ mince’ or a mixture that they use for producing faggpts (meatballs).
This pet mince normally contains off-cuts, offal and bits of internal organs, some skin, stomach lining and arteries – all the bits they could not sell to their modern customers. That takes care of the dog’s natural second and third courses.
The butcher will also set some bones aside for his best customers, which you will become if you purchase your own and your dog’s food there. Feed the meat raw mixed with the blended vegetables. Add an egg and some dry porridge oats to bind it all and provide fibre and you have the ideal dog’s dinner.
This sort of meal will vary on its own because you do not eat the same vegetables every day. You could add an apple or other fruit and celery is good as well.

5 Tips For Training Dogs Successfully
January 29, 2012 by Scott Telleman · Leave a Comment
Training dogs is not a hard. You just need patience, dedication and some simple tactics and you will teach them successfully.
Here are five top tips on how to train your dogs successfully:
1. To avoid your dog getting confused and so that they can learn to recognize commands easily only one person should be responsible for training the dog initially. If too many people are trying to train the dog at the same time this can stop progress in its tracks.
2. You should use positive reinforcements. If the dog does something good, you should reward this behavior so that he will know that what he did was right. If the dog cannot understand or follow your commands, never push him. Dogs are not as intelligent as humans, they make mistakes. What you should understand is that they won’t easily understand your commands in just one teaching, it takes repetition to train a dog successfully. Do not scold your dog as he might develop fear which will hinder his learning and willingness to be trained. You can use treats in order to encourage your dogs, although don’t overdue it.
3. Teach commands one at a time. Try to teach him one command after the other. If he cannot absorb it, try to stay on that command only because adding additional commands will just confuse the dog. Start with the basics.
4. In executing commands, you should keep your voice cheerful so that the dog will happily follow your commands. Dogs will respond to a low and coaxing voice. If you shout out loud, he may become startled and unresponsive.
5. Train your dog in various places. If you keep your dogs in a certain place like your home, he will not be able to adjust with the environment new people. Take him to the park or through the neighborhood. This will help your dog associate with other dogs and people.
Training your dog can sometime be tough, but it will be worth it. In the end, you will be the one to benefit when your dog is trained. You don’t know he might even save your life one day and pay back everything you taught him.

Easy Dog Tricks
January 24, 2012 by Scott Telleman · Comments Off
To teach your dog tricks even easy ones you need to have some small reward treats, be in a quiet suitable place and keep the training sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or your dog will start to get board, remember when he gets something right lots of praise and a reward treat, just be careful not to get him over excited or he will loose concentration.
Getting your dog to give you his paw, first get your dog to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take your dogs paw in your hand, give the dog a treat, repeat this, after a few times do not take his paw so quickly, say the word, count to one then take it, you should notice he is bringing his paw up as you say the word if he does not go back to saying it at the same time, do it a few more times then slow your response again. After 2 or 3 sessions most dogs pick this one up quite happily.
The high five, like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this cast the paw trick. Hold a treat in your fingers and raise your hand slightly higher than you would for the paw trick. You dog will think you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we taught him earlier, as he reaches up you say “high five” and give him the treat. Once your dog has mastered the paw trick this one should be very easy to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than voice control.
Getting your dog to jump through a hoop, before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your dog to heart himself while doing the trick.
Sit your dog on one side of a hoola hoop, get the dogs attention on your hand on the other side of the hoop take a treat in your hand and give the dog the command to release him from the sit, at first he may attempt to go around or under the hoop, if this happens start again, your dog wants the treat and will soon learn that going around or under does not get it so he will soon start going through it, when he does say hoopla and give him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop on the command of hoopla.
When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog (a Labrador) so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist height, if you have a smaller dog you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so the dog just goes through the hoop and then slowly raise it as he gets used to the trick.

An Introductory Overview Of Popular Police Dogs
January 20, 2012 by Heinz Kaufmann · Comments Off
The German Shepherd cop dog is worth its weight in gold considering its basic characteristics, that are intelligence and physical strength. These dogs make remarkable companions and are very obedient and protective towards their masters.
They were first used in Germany in the 19th century, merelyas protectors of police personnel particularly those who patrol the dark streets of Berlin. Due to their qualities, they offered outstanding protection to the police against felons.
The first breeding club was formed in 1899 which makes German Shepherds a relatively new type. Its initial purpose was to serve as herder of cattle but due to its unparalleled braveness and intelligence they were trained as police and guard dogs by VS, a German breeding club.
The dog was bred very carefully to promote its utility and cleverness. Moreover, the training practices focused on the skills of protectiveness, tracking and loyalty. Abundance of time and money was spent on developing this dog and training it.
Europeans considered training German Shepherds to be police dogs as a gamble and expensive. They were used a protective dogs rather than an important part of the police force. But this changed after the First World War due to the important role they played during that time.
One of the factors for a superb law enforcement agency is to have properly cared German Shepherd cop dogs. They are of great help not only as personnel protectors but also to search and rescue operations. The dogs’ excellent sense of smell is further enhanced for them to be able to track explosive substances and drugs.
Its attentiveness also makes it incomparable. It can locate decomposing bodies through its keen olfactory sense combined with proper training. German Shepherd played a significant role during the World War I and became famous in America. But post World War II, the popularity tailed off because of the image brought by Nazi Germany.
The Nazi German association with these canines ended up in renaming German Shepherds into American Shepherds or Alsatian dogs. This was to stop the negative undertone of them and retain the qualities they were initially known for – loyal, good tempered and smart dogs.
These canines have become one of the highly acclaimed breeds not only in the US but in different parts of the world. It may be due to the inevitable role they play in law enforcement. In chaotic public places, they are used to regain social order with their loud bark. They are also being trained to be part of search and rescue operations as well as running after law offenders. They are well-cared for and respected. Cop dogs are even provided with bulletproof vests while at duty and harming or killing them is considered a crime.
German shepherd retriever mixed breed dogs are usually loving companions and sturdy guards. In the event you enjoyed reading this article you may be interested in our page on German shepherd eye infections.
Very Good News And Bad News – Orijen Dog Food Review
January 19, 2012 by Alyssa Reed · Comments Off
Buy this food, you will not be disappointed! My dogs are in love with Canidae Maintenance Formula for All Life Stages, and so am I.
I certainly would say, conditionally, this is turning out to be a good food for my dog and would suggest it to others looking for a quality food. It’s been about 2 months now on Canidae. It is supposed to arrive a week after the 17th, which means it will have taken 2 weeks to get my delivery. Not a big deal if you are waiting on something frivolous, but food for you pets should be delivered more quickly.
I found this dog food after doing research to help my dog’s allergies (2 Goldens). My dog had terrible allergies and she has been on Canidae All Life Stages for about 5 weeks now.
My dog loved this food and he was a very picky eater. I felt I was giving him healthy food with no fillers. It has been almost a year. My dog, Molly, is bouncy and healthy and almost allergy free.
If you have seen a blog concerning something about Acetaminophen being in Canidae, that is false. Some lady said she had Canidae and some other foods tested by putting them in a baggie together, and any way it was a false allegation but the internet spreads rumors like wildfire. My vet thought it must have been something she ate and recommended I feed her chicken and rice for a week to even her out. I did this and the problem was solved.
My German shepherd and 2 golden retrievers have the most incredible coats. Their poops are firm (and easy to pick up) and nearly odorless. My dog has had the worst gas and runny stools. I now need to find a food that he can handle which is not an easy task since he’s got skin allergies…and I won’t buy just anything…it’s got to be topnotch. So far everyone is doing great, after the Canidae got out of their systems. I started feeding my dogs Canidae All Life Stages Dry Dog Food almost 5 years ago.
It had to be my dogs. Make sure you buy a food that does feeding trials.
I have been feeding my pack of competitive working dogs (Border Collies and Australian Shepherds) for 6 years and about 30 boarding dogs per day and I have not found anything even close to the quality and value of Canidae. Many kennels try to cut corners on feed but I believe paying a little more for Canidae has made money. I ordered directly from Pet Food Direct before I saw the negative reviews here. So after delivery, I decided I would make the transition slowly. I read the review from the person that once gave this product a great review and now thinks the product has changed due to her dogs’ digestive issues (or something like that). I left a message for Canidae about 20 minutes ago, and they already called me back at work to answer my questions (unlike Blue during the food scare).
All in all I couldn’t be happier with this food and my dogs will stay on it as long as they continue making it. used welders.
It’s A Reputable Item – Orijen Dog Food Review
January 18, 2012 by Landon Long · Comments Off
I’m glad that there is a pet food made without ‘junk’ that I can feed my pet. This is a great product.
I have now chosen a food for them that is GRAIN FREE and they are now starting to chow down like they once did. We will have a long recovery road ahead for our male dog as his coat and face has it the worst. I placed my order on the 10th, and it didn’t start to ship until the 17th. It took a week before it even left the facility.
I can always depend on Amazon. I’ve now got this on auto-delivery. Riley is still looking good. No sudden hair loss, healthy, energetic, eating as I type, still happy with this decision, and am still using it. I was a little hesitant at first due to the price but figured my dogs were worth it. Since making the switch my rescue yellow lab has made vast improvements. We have had many cases of serious diarrhea, and when talking to local Veterinarians we use, have found that many have seen recent issues with Canidae causing their client’s dogs to have similar diarrhea as we have experienced. I know Canidae has in the past changed their formula causing problems and it appears to have happened again.
Digesting kibbles is a problem a lot of old dogs have. She appears healthy, much better than on previous dry foods we have tried, including other organics.
Plus, many dog owners were upset that Canidae did not make much of an effort to inform their customers of the new formula change. I sent another e-mail to Canidae regarding the formula change, their lack of informing their customers about it, and how my dog has been reacting to it. Also, each day, her coat seemed less shiny and she had a ton of dandruff, and scratched like crazy. After only a week on Canidae (I’m gradually mixing more and more of it in, and decreasing the Eukanuba) she’s stopped itching, and her poop is way more solid and far less frequent. The food quality was the same as the bags I bought in stores, and it is a great food overall. The only issues I have had are with the delivery.
I’d recommend it to any dog owner. This food is amazing. I adopted my dog about 6 months ago and he had digestive problems that the vet could find no cause for. He would get diarrhea with mucous in stools regularly.
She is very used to Newman’s own now and it gives her very good bowl movement. Always a plus! If your dog doesn’t have weird kibble digestion issues like mine do, then Canidae Grain Free ALS is a 5 star dog food. For my dogs’ sensitive systems, it’s a 4-star food.
But if you think about how people react to a healthy diet in the beginning it makes sense. infrared grill.
Effective Little Unit – Vegetarian Dog Food Review
January 18, 2012 by Emily Bailey · Comments Off
My Mom picked up this Newman’s food because it was available at the grocery store. They love the food, but what really surprises me is that his ears and skin have improved dramatically. But I can honestly say I’ve had no problems with this kibble at all, & will keep feeding it. We adopted a mastiff mix puppy last year, and after some research, I threw away a 90% full bag of Puppy Chow because it’s just not good for dogs. They have always done well on the food. Currently, I have three dogs and they have had no issues with the new formulations.
It is marketing lies to fool you into thinking you are paying more for quality ingredients when you are not getting organic chicken. This food might have great contents, but my 7 1/2 pound, 11/2 year old poodle doesn’t like the taste.
They didn’t address my comments about how it was making my dog and others sick, they just stated that they did their best to post their changes on the internet. From what I have been reading in posts, that is not the case. It still works out being cheaper than the $50 bag of 17 pound I/D I was ordering so I’m still happy with it. Science diet was sending me to the poor house. My little (10 and 13 pounds) dogs love it, easy to eat small bits, and it’s a high grade food source for them. What more can I say. She is very used to Newman’s own now and it gives her very good bowl movement. Always a plus! If you have seen a blog concerning something about Acetaminophen being in Canidae, that is false. Some lady said she had Canidae and some other foods tested by putting them in a baggie together, and any way it was a false allegation but the internet spreads rumors like wildfire. Our picky dogs enjoy this food and so do I, knowing I feel good about the quality and mix it with canned PN food. She doesn’t care for it by itself but then she doesn’t like any dry dog food.
After about a week on the new food, he had noticeably more energy and his coat started to become much healthier. On top of that, the odor that he emitted started to subside until it was no longer there. She told me that because German Shepards have sensitive stomachs and also prone to hip problems is why this product is so beneficial to their dogs. Ever since a puppy my dogs have been on Canidae.
I also loved the convenience of having it sent to the house monthly. Not having to shop and drag a big weighty item home was great.
All has been well with my fur baby ever since
And to have it brought right to my front door for cheaper than I can get it at the local store, how can you beat that” My dogs love this food. Use the food cost calculator. Your dog eats less of this than many of the garbage filled brands.
Unlike a lot of subpar dog foods, there is no corn! confetti shredder reviews.
