If you are a dog owner then you need to know about the best dog training tools. Dog training should be high on the list of priorities for any dog owner. This is especially true if you have just gotten a puppy. Anyone who is a new dog owner knows how overwhelming the idea of training him can seem. Thus it helps to know exactly what you are getting into before you ever go shopping for the right tools. After all, you have to know what you need.
All told, there are six tools you really need to start training your new dog. First of all, of course, you need a leash. Usually it is better to get a long one, about six feet long. That way, you can start training your dog in distance and control. The width of the leash depends on the size of your dog. Smaller dogs can get by with more narrow leashes.
A good collar is also important. You should look for what is known as a jeweled color. It is not really jeweled. Rather, it is comprised of closely welded metal links. That makes the colors very strong. That way, your dog will not be able to chew through it or slip out of it.
You will need some behavioral tools, such as a shake can. These can be made at home, with an empty can and some pennies or small stones You can also purchase one at a pet supply store. It will allow you to make a loud noise to get your dog attention when he is doing something he shouldn’t.
Crates are good for teaching proper behavior as well. They are also essential for house training. Your dog needs to have enough room in the crate to be comfortable. There are expandable crates on the market that are great for dogs that grow larger quickly. Aas your dog grows, so too can the size of the crate.
A baby gate, or a puppy gate, is also a great dog training tool to have. Naturally, you can use the gate to keep your dog from getting into certain parts of the house. However, since gates do not obstruct the dog’s view, he will still feel like a valued member of the family.
Believe it or not, a spray bottle can also be helpful. A simple spritz can stop your dog from doing a lot of the things he is not supposed to do. More importantly, you are disciplining the dog without hurting him.
